The IJ Cleaner Secret Diary

19 real stories from years of cleaning homes in Florida — the products, unexpected tools and little discoveries I still talk about.

19 stories · 19 products & tools · real experience
If you opened the trunk of my car during a workday, you might have found a blue cloth, a purple gallon jug, a paintbrush, a cordless drill and four wool balls. It all belonged there. Every item has a story, and this is my behind-the-scenes notebook.

I know it sounds dramatic to call a blue microfiber cloth the king of cleaning. But that Puomue glass cloth genuinely changed the pace of my work. I would hold it under running water for just a moment, fold it and wring it thoroughly. The secret wasn’t getting it wet; it was leaving it only barely damp, evenly across the cloth.

Then came the satisfying part: mirrors, glass doors, faucet handles, stainless steel, finished cabinet doors, a lightly greasy cooktop, ceramic decorations, the outsides of the fridge and microwave. On ordinary glass smudges, the little traces of moisture would disappear without leaving streaks. If I needed that instant, magazine-photo finish, a second identical cloth — completely dry — followed right behind.

Heavy grease and dust were different stories. For dirty, greasy glass I took off the worst with paper towel and glass cleaner first, then used the dry cloth with glass cleaner so a damp cloth wouldn’t dilute it. I never treated this as a bathroom disinfectant. And I’d rather pick up dust with a Swiffer duster than carry it from a shelf onto a perfect mirror. Two inexpensive pieces of cloth saved me an astonishing amount of time.

The quiet battle against pink bathroom grout

The quiet battle against pink bathroom groutClorox Plus Tilex Mold & Mildew Remover • 32 oz
Clorox Plus Tilex Mold & Mildew Remover • 32 ozWalmart · Reference price
US$ 5,76See product at store ↗

One of the least glamorous surprises in a bathroom was that pinkish film creeping along shower grout. I brought Clorox Plus Tilex Mold & Mildew Remover into my routine for those jobs. Sometimes the pink stuff was a bacterial film rather than actual mold, but either way it made a clean bathroom look neglected.

My time-saving trick was about when I started: the shower grout came first. While that area was being treated, I moved to other bathroom tasks. Then I came back with a toothbrush or a narrow nail brush for tight grout lines and a sponge for broader areas, followed by a thorough rinse and dry.

I even discovered that buildup could make an electric toothbrush handle or stand look awful. That was one of my unusual cleaning anecdotes, not a reason to spray a bleach product on electrical charging parts. In the field, knowing which mess to tackle first mattered as much as knowing which bottle to reach for.

The purple gallon that changed how I looked at bathtubs

The purple gallon that changed how I looked at bathtubsZep Industrial Purple Degreaser • 1 gal
Zep Industrial Purple Degreaser • 1 galHome Depot · Reference price
US$ 16,98See product at store ↗

There was a reason I once bought Zep Industrial Purple Degreaser by the big Home Depot gallon: I loved what it did to greasy buildup. A bathtub can turn nearly black from body oils, soap and old grime, even though people keep attacking it with products meant for entirely different problems.

In my own routine, I covered the grimy bathtub with the degreaser and let it sit while I worked elsewhere. Then — and this is exactly how I described my experience — I scrubbed with a sponge and dish soap before that final rinse. I loved the way the last pass seemed to finish the job and leave the sink or tub looking brighter.

What I learned was to recognize the type of dirt. A filthy-looking tub didn’t always need another round of bleach; sometimes grease was the real enemy. This is a story about the way I worked, not a universal formula for every bathtub material or finish.

Orange Glo: open-house shine without greasy fingerprints

Orange Glo: open-house shine without greasy fingerprintsOrange Glo 2-in-1 Clean & Polish

I wanted the shiny, polished look of a house ready for a real-estate showing — not a house where the client’s hand came away oily after touching a table. Orange Glo 2-in-1 Clean & Polish became a tool I used selectively on finished wood: cabinet fronts, furniture legs and decorative pieces rather than dining tabletops, drawer pulls or the handles everyone touches.

And here is my unexpected trick: on some stainless-steel appliance exteriors, a tiny amount on a microfiber cloth, wiped with the grain, gave me the sort of gleam that made a kitchen look brand new. It was a finishing touch from my own cleaning experience, not something I assumed would suit every coated appliance.

For me the test of a job was what happened after I left. Beautiful reflections are wonderful, but nobody should pick up a remote control or open a fridge and feel as though the cleaning product is still on their hands.

The yellow Dollar Tree bottle nobody expected to be famous

LA’s Totally Awesome All-Purpose Concentrated • 20 fl ozDollar Tree — preço same-day consultado · Reference price
US$ 1,50See product at store ↗

If you had asked me which cheap product could make a tired white grout line look alive again, I might have surprised you with the yellow LA’s Totally Awesome concentrate from Dollar Tree. It didn’t have fancy packaging or the scent of an expensive hotel. I loved it for certain deeply ingrained stains.

Imagine a light floor that looks dirty even after mopping because every grout line is beige. Near toilets, old urine residue could seem permanently moved in. In my routine I applied the cleaner along the grout line, left it for roughly five to ten minutes, scrubbed and then removed the residue before finishing the floor.

The star accessory was a paintbrush. Yes, an actual paintbrush. With dozens of narrow grout lines, it could be faster than chasing every inch with a tiny scrubbing brush. The product smelled awful to me, so I always appreciated ending the job with a fresh-smelling floor instead of a chemical-store atmosphere.

How a Lysol bottle ended up in my shower-glass story

Lysol Power Toilet Bowl Cleaner • 24 fl ozWalmart · Reference price
US$ 2,67See product at store ↗

A toilet-bowl cleaner in a story about shower glass? That was the kind of discovery that made people look twice at my cleaning bag. I noticed stubborn hard-water drops and mineral marks that regular wiping didn’t always budge. In my own jobs, Lysol Power Toilet Bowl Cleaner became one of my unusual experiments on certain shower-glass panels.

I worked one panel at a time, keeping track of the surrounding finishes and rinsing and drying straight away. My favorite final touch was that same blue Puomue cloth. I also noticed that mineral spots on some faucets could disappear quickly, although metal and protective coatings are another story entirely.

I’m telling you what I saw as a professional, not suggesting anyone improvise with acidic toilet cleaners around stone, metal or coated glass. The real diary moment is the surprise of learning how different hard-water residue is from ordinary soap grime.

Bar Keepers Friend: the creamy one won my heart

Bar Keepers Friend Soft Cleanser • 26 ozWalmart • versão cremosa, não em pó · Reference price
US$ 2,97See product at store ↗

I’ll say it: I was not a fan of the powder. For my kind of work, Bar Keepers Friend Soft Cleanser was the winner. I liked taking a little of the creamy formula onto a sponge, working the compatible stainless-steel sink, pot or porcelain surface, then rinsing or wiping away what remained.

And its most satisfying little performance? Rust stains. Those orange marks on a sink can make an otherwise spotless kitchen look worn out. Watching them lift was the sort of quiet victory a cleaner remembers.

The appeal wasn’t a mysterious new trick that the manufacturer never imagined. It was finding the version of a familiar product that fit my workflow: less fuss, less loose powder, more control and that clean stainless-steel finish.

Fabuloso lavender: when the cleaning arrives before you do

Fabuloso Lavender 2X • 56 fl ozWalmart · Reference price
US$ 4,97See product at store ↗

In Florida homes, the smell often greets you before you even notice the shiny floor. I loved how Fabuloso Lavender gave so many clients that just-cleaned feeling. I joked about my very unofficial “field survey”: 80% lavender Fabuloso, 15% green Mr. Clean, 4% mild Mrs. Meyer’s and 1% plain water. Those are my impressions, not real market research; every client has a different nose.

One detail I paid attention to was the entry door. A lightly scented cloth on an appropriate surface near the entrance could change that very first impression. I wanted guests to walk into a rental and feel that someone had cared for it.

I also told you about a very unusual old trick I tried in vacant rentals with overpowering smoke, pet, food or incense odors: heating a water-and-cleaner mixture in a pan and leaving time before guests arrived. That is an anecdote from my past, not a home-fragrance recipe to repeat. What mattered to me was how powerfully a smell could change the experience of a cleaned house.

Green Mr. Clean: not everybody wants lavender

Mr. Clean Febreze Meadows & Rain • 41 fl ozWalmart • opção verde de referência · Reference price
US$ 5,94See product at store ↗

After enough houses, you learn that a scent can be somebody’s favorite and somebody else’s worst nightmare. My green Mr. Clean Multi-Surface belonged in the kit for people who wanted a different kind of clean smell: fresh and green rather than obviously floral.

I liked the flexibility of talking to a client about how they wanted their home to feel. Some wanted the “I can smell the cleaning from the driveway” treatment; some wanted barely a trace. A polished room should still feel like their home.

This is why I never thought one fragrance could be the answer to every house. Good cleaning has a little hospitality in it: look at the space, listen to the person and finish the job in a way that makes sense to them.

Mrs. Meyer’s: a clean home without smelling like a perfume store

Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day Multi-Surface Basil • 16 fl ozWalmart • opção Basil · Reference price
US$ 4,94See product at store ↗

Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day was another option I brought up when talking about gentler-smelling homes. Basil or lavender could feel more subtle than the big, bold fragrances. I thought of it for families who preferred a lighter scent — especially when a home had little ones or pets and the owners didn’t want their rooms to smell like a bottle had exploded.

I wasn’t trying to rank whose idea of “clean” was correct. I was trying to make the experience match the client. A spotless floor and an overpowering fragrance are not automatically the same thing.

That was one of the small professional habits I valued: notice the people living in the house, not just the marks on the surfaces.

No, I did not mean the vinegar from your salad

Cleaning Vinegar • embalagem de 1 galãoDollar Tree • verifique se é o vinagre de limpeza, não culinário · Reference price

When I said I kept vinegar in my cleaning supplies, I meant the large cleaning-vinegar bottle sold at Dollar Tree — not the tiny cooking-vinegar bottle you keep by the oil and salt. This distinction mattered because I wanted to show you what was actually in my car.

I had a favorite floor-bucket routine combining hot water, a little dish soap, some cleaning vinegar and a fragrant floor product. In my experience, the floor could look bright, feel less greasy and dry surprisingly fast. I also knew that delicate wood and certain glossy finishes were not where I would casually experiment.

Part of the secret was that I noticed the difference between floors in real homes. The same “mop and go” solution never worked equally well for every surface.

Swiffer Wet and that “rich person’s house” smell

Swiffer Sweeper Wet Lavender • 24 panosWalmart · Reference price
US$ 9,94See product at store ↗

You know that scent that makes you think, “This smells like an expensive house”? That was my completely unscientific description of Swiffer Wet Lavender. It made me laugh, but clients really do register a cleaning with their eyes, feet and noses.

I liked the pre-moistened cloths for quick floor passes: the little textured pad caught hair and pet fur instead of just moving it around. In compatible homes they could be handy on hard flooring, and the lavender version added that finishing scent.

My complaint? The cost. They aren’t cheap when you work in multiple houses. For professional jobs, it made more sense when a client purchased the supplies and I charged for the service. A good product still has to make financial sense inside a real cleaner’s schedule.

Swiffer 360°: the duster I retired after every client

Swiffer Dusters Heavy Duty 360° • 6 refisWalmart • refis, sem cabo · Reference price
US$ 9,94See product at store ↗

Some cleaning products earn a permanent place in your kit because they save you from awkward little tasks. Swiffer Dusters Heavy Duty 360° was one of mine: blinds, lampshades, decorative pieces, tiny spaces and dust that refused to stay put. The fibers wrapped around things and the two sides helped me work longer on one job.

But I had one rule I never bent: I threw out the used duster at the end of each client’s house. I didn’t care if it still looked fluffy. I was not bringing one household’s dust, debris or germs to another.

The same logic applied to washing my reusable microfiber cloths and mop heads. Saving a few cents at the expense of another client’s hygiene never felt like a saving to me.

Magic Eraser: sometimes a wall doesn’t need repainting

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Original • 6 unidadesWalmart · Reference price
US$ 8,20See product at store ↗

Move-out houses can have walls that look as if every suitcase, shoe and hand in the neighborhood has signed them. Scuffs make people think about paint almost immediately. I discovered that Mr. Clean Magic Eraser could sometimes rescue a compatible painted wall before anyone had to talk about repainting.

The satisfaction was incredible: a mark that looked permanent suddenly looked smaller or disappeared. Of course, a melamine sponge is mildly abrasive, and not every matte or delicate paint tolerates that kind of treatment.

What stayed in my mind was the idea of looking closely at the problem instead of assuming the most expensive solution was the only one.

The little blue vacuum that didn’t need to show off

Canister azul sem saco • 2 acessóriosBrandsMart USA • modelo anunciado como NEN110F · Reference price
US$ 89,99See product at store ↗

I loved my blue lightweight bagless canister vacuum because it just got on with the job. It fit in the car, didn’t fight me on stairs, had a telescopic wand for different heights, rubber wheels that were kind to the floor, a foot-operated switch and a retractable cable. The suction was plenty for my everyday work and it wasn’t outrageously noisy.

My favorite tiny feature was the air-release valve near the grip: when the head stuck to a rug, a quick adjustment made life easier. It came with useful attachments and was practical for both carpet and hard flooring.

Important correction: bagless does not mean filterless. Mine had two washable filters. I wasn’t calling it a construction-cleanup machine, a fancy cordless stick vacuum or some ultra-silent miracle. It was affordable, durable and easy to carry — exactly the kind of dependable tool that makes a long workday better.

The telescopic pole that understood my aching back

Wooster Sherlock Extension Pole • 4 a 8 ftHome Depot • exemplo de cabo telescópico, não confirmação do modelo original · Reference price
US$ 29,48See product at store ↗

When you clean two or three homes in a day, bending and stretching stops being a tiny inconvenience. It becomes part of your life. I liked my compact telescopic extension pole because a reach of roughly two to two and a half meters was enough to spare me constant awkward movements without turning the car into a construction truck.

One pole could work with a compatible mop head, broom, wall duster or window squeegee. It helped on high glass, cobwebs, finished walls and larger floor passes. For post-construction jobs, I could change the attachment instead of carrying a forest of separate handles.

My idea of a good tool was simple: practical, fast, easy to transport and a little kinder to the person using it all day.

Four wool balls in the car — and they weren’t decoration

Wool Dryer Balls • pacote de 6Walmart • modelos variados; preço de referência · Reference price

Yes, I carried four wool dryer balls around with the cleaning supplies. In homes where laundry was part of the job, I liked how they helped separate clothes in the tumble dryer and could reduce wrinkles or static while avoiding the need to lug around another heavy bottle of fabric softener.

I even experimented with lavender essential oil on the balls because I liked that fresh bedding smell. That was something I tried, not a tip I’d tell strangers to copy in a heated dryer: oils and heat deserve special care.

One of the funny things about professional cleaning is how a tiny, odd-looking accessory ends up earning its own place in a packed car.

The one tool nobody expects in a cleaner’s kit

Parafusadeira variável + kit com escovas para limpezaHome Depot • equipamentos variam conforme voltagem e acessórios · Reference price

A cordless drill? For house cleaning? Absolutely — at least in my work bag. The secret was adjustable speed and having two different brush attachments. One had a flat head with medium bristles for certain upholstery and carpet work. The other was rounded, a bit like a toilet brush in shape, but here is the correction I made very clearly: it was for corners and tight spaces, not for cleaning toilets.

The drill could take some of the repetitive effort out of certain tasks. It also helped me loosen hair and pet fur from small entrance rugs and car carpeting. I liked the idea of a tool you might expect on a construction site turning into an ally in a deep clean.

Of course the surface and brush made a difference. My story is about a tool I used, not permission to scrub every fabric at full speed.

Windex on carpet: the stain that turned into a story

Windex Original Blue Glass CleanerWalmart • confirme o volume antes de comprar · Reference price
Consultar preço atualSee product at store ↗

This was one of those tricks I knew would get attention: I found Windex useful for certain localized carpet stains. I would apply a small amount and work promptly with my adjustable-speed drill and the appropriate medium-bristle attachment, then finish with a dry cloth to help the area dry faster. It was an unusual firsthand discovery, not a carpet-cleaner label recommendation.

The drill also helped with stubborn hairs on entry mats and in car carpeting — where a regular vacuum sometimes left a few stragglers behind. I always noticed which attachment reached the corners and which spread its work across the surface.

But here’s the part a rushed cleaner might miss. If a whole carpet had turned yellow, spot-cleaning one area could leave an obvious pale patch. I didn’t pretend a patch treatment would fix the entire room. That was when I preferred a proper carpet-cleaning extractor; renting one from a participating Publix or Home Depot location could be an accessible option. Some messes are about knowing when to change the tool altogether.
